Scientists have been sounding from the rooftops for decades now that climate change threatens the very existence of our species, and yet little to nothing has been done to mitigate this looming catastrophe. Billions of tons of carbon dioxide are emitted into the atmosphere each year as a result of our careless burning of fossil fuels, and global population growth shows no signs of slowing down. Right wing demagogues constantly tell us that ISIS, the national debt and nuclear war are primary security threats, while ignoring the greatest threat mankind has ever faced: climate change.
President Obama stated in his state of the union address, that “no challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change”. Wiser words were never spoken, as scientists continue to warn of a myriad of natural disasters if we do not change course immediately and drastically. The scientific computer models that predict climate change are now so accurate that only the most technology averse and stubborn right wingers deny their legitimacy. Droughts, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are among the many disasters predicted to ravage our planet if we continue on this path. Ocean acidification is yet another predicted outcome, leading to the destruction of marine habitats and the extinction of many oceanic species.
The national defense budget should be entirely donated to fighting climate change, by investing in green technologies that allow us to eliminate fossil fuels. The only thing standing in the way of this happening, is republican opposition. Republicans are literally holding the world to ransom by refusing to accept the science of climate change, while the lives of billions of people hang in the balance. We have to start taking a pragmatic approach to this problem and outlaw climate change denial once and for all. If we refuse to do this out of respect for ‘the constitution’, we are literally condemning the planet to total destruction. We all have to ask ourselves, are we willing to sacrifice the planet for an ancient document that most constitutional scholars believe no longer applies? Or are we willing to do what it takes to save our childrens’ future?
