We have a First Amendment in this country. It protects the right to free speech, as defined by the Supreme Court. However, nobody, not even the Supreme Court, believes that the First Amendment protects hate speech. What the “alt-right” repeatedly does under the guise of “free speech”, is publish seditious and dangerous ideas, such as the notion that the Holocaust did not result in the mass extermination by Zyklon B of precisely 6 billion Jews. This type of extremely dangerous thought is harmful to a cohesive society in which we must never forget.
Government should move to follow Twitter’s lead. Twitter is a private actor company, an obsolete relic of pre-progressive history, and consequently many would argue that the First Amendment is irrelevant to them. Nonetheless, progressivism is all about the oversight of, and application of government edicts to private business so that corporations cannot rape and exploit common workers as they have done throughout history.
Twitter’s move to suspend these dangerous and heretical accounts was the right thing to do. The Zeroth Amendment guarantees the right of any person, anywhere, anytime, to come and live in the United States and to receive free health care, food, housing, a cellphone, and everything else that they lack “access” to in their home country. But even the Zeroth has limits. It does not apply to white people anywhere.
Sensible limits exist to every Amendment, including the 2nd, where common sense dictates that the limit should ban all private ownership of firearms. Obama, as a preeminent Constitutional Scholar, pretty much agrees with this viewpoint and he went to Harvard. He additionally agrees on limiting hate speech such as the alt-right publishes.
The alt-right is known for publishing things like that we are not all precisely equal in every single way except for skin color. And that multiculturalism is scientifically shown to not lead to a stronger society. They rallied for Trump.
Much is made of the “free marketplace for ideas,” but progressives know that free markets don’t work in anything else, so why should a marketplace of ideas be left to its own devices on Twitter or any other social network? In the commercial marketplace, collusion between corporations and governments leads to price distortions and unfair play. So we need government to get more into these markets to increase its control of them. The same is true for marketplaces of ideas. They must also not be allowed to fall prey to the haze of dangerous ideas and seditious, heretical talk.
Twitter’s move to ban these accounts is a good first step in exercising oversight and control of the marketplace of ideas. For too long, fanatical right wing extremists have used that platform to push for things which are simply not acceptable in Current Year as legitimate discourse. Join with your fellow progressives in this stifling of their speech.
