Yesterday, Trump held a summit at Trump Tower and invited a host of leading journalists, news anchors and executives from America’s top accredited media corporations. The invitees accepted the invitation, thinking it would be an opportunity to grill the President-elect on his bigotry, damaging policies and many character flaws. But instead, Trump used this meeting as an opportunity to vent his personal vendetta against the accredited media, subjecting his guests to a series of terrifying rants, laden with implicit threats and intimidation.
The guests were horrified when Trump lashed out at various networks, calling them liars and shills, and accusing them of unfair coverage of the election. He criticized them profusely for accurately covering his many bigoted statements, corruption and sex scandals, and threatened them with legal action and intimidation if the dared challenge his authority again. He also insinuated that they were somehow protecting Hillary, and that ignoring Russia’s attempt to influence our elections with the stolen Wikileaks documents was the wrong thing to do.
Never before has our country witnessed such an aggressive and outspoken criticism of the accredited media. Social scholars are worried that this mistreatment of the media signals a coming persecution of the free press, which we have witnessed over and over again in fascist regimes. It’s time to take a stand against the oppressive Trump regime, and to show our support for the many accredited media corporations that most Americans hold dear to their hearts, such as CNN, MSNBC and the New York Times. Although it scares me to admit it; if we fail to speak out now, we may never have the opportunity to do so again in America.
