One thing that seems to distinguish Nobel Peace Prize winners is that they are predominantly on the left, and not one of them is a prominent conservative. With so many right-wing public figures claiming to do good in the world, and so many Christian-conservative missionaries supposedly doing charitable work in developing countries, one has to wonder why not a single one of them has been awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize? The short answer is that only public figures on the left seem to have the compassion and drive necessary to make truly significant contributions to world peace and the well-being of mankind.
When it comes to social justice issues, for which many Peace Prizes have been awarded, the left is inevitably pioneering solutions to them while the right pushes them aside and pretends that they don’t exist. Black Lives Matter, for example, is probably one of the most important social justice movements of our lifetimes, courageously challenging the culture of racism and police brutality within America’s law enforcement. The left is actively supporting this brave movement, while the right acts as if racism is not even a pressing issue in the 21st century, demonstrating again why right-wingers tend to be sidelined during the nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
There are also key differences between how the left and right approach foreign policy. When the Democrats engage a country in kinetic action, it is almost always a humanitarian intervention. For example, Obama and Hillary intervened in Libya to free the people from Gaddafi’s reign of terror, and they have been intervening in Syria for the same reasons. Bush, however invaded Iraq in order to enrich oil companies and steal Iraq’s resources, and he even characterized the invasion as a modern day Christian “crusade”, in a shocking display of Islamaphobia. Although their foreign policy decisions may seem similar on the surface, there are key differences between the motivations of Democrats vs those of Republicans, explaining again why Democrats are far more likely to win Nobel Peace Prizes.
Lastly, on environmental issues such as Climate Change, Republicans have steadfastly refused to accept any kind of international deal to cut carbon emissions, while Democrats have been working non-stop to implement measures to avert this impending disaster. Al Gore won the Peace Prize for simply waking up millions of ignorant Americans to the catastrophes that face the world if we do not act, thereby helping to avoid future global conflicts over resources as a result of droughts and floods. To this day however, many Republicans, including President-Elect Donald Trump himself, are Climate Change deniers.
With the left constantly working to tackle the world’s most pressing social justice, humanitarian and environmental issues, while the right continues to promote racism, sexism, unjust wars and over-industrialization, it’s easy to see why progressives are the primary recipients of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. I suspect it will remain this way long into the future, as conservatives show no signs of changing their ways. And one can only hope that through the Nobel committee’s repeated recognition of the good deeds of the left, the world will eventually come together and rally it’s support behind progressive leaders, so that we can truly create a new world order based on peace, justice and equality for all.
