The alt right has been out in full force after a group of teens allegedly restrained a disabled teen two days ago. The details of the incident are still under investigation, but Trump supporters and white nationalists have nevertheless seized upon the event due to the racial makeup of the alleged restrainers and the fact that the disabled victim happened to be white. Thousands of racists on social media and various fake news platforms have demanded that the accredited media mention the races of the suspects and the victim, claiming this was somehow a racially motivated ‘attack’.
The alt right has used what appears to be an ablest hate crime if anything, to justify their vitriol and hatred for African Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement. Comments are abounding that white people should start ‘getting wise’ to incidents like this and start responding with violence and aggression. The Young Turks were criticized profusely for being slow to report this incident, and were then criticized again when they did report it, for not mentioning the races of the perpetrators and the victim in the video title.
The youths who restrained the individual posted the incident on Facebook, helping to turn this fairly insignificant low level crime into a national story, and giving fuel to racists and white supremacists to justify their extreme views. This demonstrates yet again the need for sensible internet regulations to prevent the spread of harmful and inappropriate information over the internet, and the need for social media giants like Facebook and Youtube to crack down further on fake news.
The incident also demonstrates the need for stricter laws to protect the disabled, who regularly suffer hate crimes in America, usually at the hands of right wing extremists who subscribe to Hitler’s ideology of Social Darwinism. There have been numerous reports of Trump supporters abusing disabled people at Trump rallies, and of course Trump’s mocking of a disabled reporter served to embolden these hate-fueled bigots even further.
The police chief has stated that although Trump’s name was mentioned during the incident, it’s unlikely that this had anything to do with the alleged crime. The circumstances that led to this unfortunate event are still under investigation, and the causes are still unknown. Until the investigation is complete, we need to refrain from jumping to conclusions, especially when those conclusions support extremist political views. We also need to put this incident in perspective, and remember the vast number of racially motivated attacks by the police against innocent African Americans over the past year. If anything, the response of right wingers to this unfortunate incident is far more telling than the incident itself. I’m disgusted at the hatred for people of color that has been displayed on the internet over the last few days. White privilege and racism is clearly alive and well in America, and something needs to be done about it, soon.
