Recently, a host of distinguished public figures have denounced the rise of anti-immigration populism in the West. World leaders warn that this uprising is reminiscent of Nazi Germany, and that if it isn’t stopped soon, the West may fall into the grip of fascism.
Last month, Prince Charles warned about the dangers of Europe’s growing hatred and intolerance of immigrants, and urged Europeans to show compassion for struggling refugees and think about those less fortunate than themselves. George Soros has also made the very interesting and original comparison of Trump to Hitler, lamenting the West’s movement towards closed borders and fascism, stating that “I find the current moment in history very painful. Open societies are in crisis, and various forms of closed societies – from fascist dictatorships to mafia states – are on the rise”.
Thankfully though, many global leaders are starting to fight back against the rising tide of fascism. One such leader is former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has put 10 million pounds of his own money into a new company set up to fight populism. Blair states that his organization will “inform and support” political leaders in order to influence European politics.
Our only hope as progressives is that global leaders continue to speak out against Trump, Brexit and other right-wing political movements, and that more influential political figures use their wealth and influence to restore progressivism in the West. Progressives are rapidly losing hope, as Trump continues to persecute the last remaining accredited media outlets, and fake news continues to engulf the internet. We desperately need global leaders to proactively overcome this tide of fascism, and work to implement a new world order based on peace, tolerance and understanding.
