When the expired body of Osama Bin Laden was thoughtfully placed in the sea by his executioners, most Americans were prepared to call it a day on the sadness of 9/11. Yes, thousands died on that tragic November day in New York, and their memories will linger as long as the sun still shines and warms this strange planet. However, we need to recognise also that many hundreds of thousands of innocent lives perished in the aftermath as the United States avenged its victims across the Middle East. The repercussions of Al-Qaeda’s acts are still being felt today, and we need always to remember that no enemy is so strong as to destroy the very freedoms we live by.
Alas, despite the passing of the years, there is a certain type of person who still refuses to accept established facts. Despite a special 9/11 commission being set-up with an unprecedentedly wide scope of work, and despite the same commission exonerating the US Government in all respects, some conspiracy theorists refuse to let go. Hunkering in their parents’ basements, these 40/50 year-old losers spend their whole sad lives trying to find ‘inconsistencies’ in the official story. They waste the short amount of time they have on earth trolling around internet forums, arguing with anyone who will listen about their weird ideas. They talk about a ‘third tower’ falling under its own weight, of the BBC somehow announcing the collapse of same building ahead of time, about a ‘Larry Silverstein’ character who insured this building ahead of its collapse, about a war-games exercise taking place the same day which diverted the nations’ aircraft, about the impossibility of buildings collapsing at free-fall due to a fire, given that this had never happened before.
As open-minded progressive people, we turned to the 9/11 commission report to see what its authors had to say about such allegations. Needless to say, they were silent on such issues meaning that these allegations are simply not worth the pixels they were written with. The truth is not always easy to determine, but we are helped by a concept called ‘Occam’s Razor’. Under this philosophical principle, we first suppose there are two explanations for an occurrence. The simpler one is usually better. Another way of saying it is that the more assumptions you have to make, the more unlikely an explanation is.
Applying Occam’s razor to 9/11, what we know is that the passports of the terrorists were found DIRECTLY under where they crashed the planes into the buildings.
We also know that Osama Bin Laden admitted responsibility for the actions of 9/11. We also know that, if there was a conspiracy somehow involving the US Government, the Intelligence Agencies etc. many thousands of people presumably were aware. In this case, it would be almost impossible to keep a conspiracy a secret.
Believing that our government was somehow lying to us would be the ultimate betrayal. This is not the 1930s/1940s when Goebels and his ilk were using propaganda to turn ‘good Germans’ into willing accomplices. This is Current Year.
The simple answer is therefore this: Osama and his brethren did it. It is time for us all to move on and forget about this tragic event in our history. We must trust in our government and intelligence agencies.
