With the rise of the alt right and our recent losing streak with Donald Trump and Brexit, many progressives are feeling insecure and demoralized. And as right wing trolls from 4chan, Breitbart and Zerohedge continue to intimidate us with their supposed knowledge of history, economics and foreign policy, many of us feel outsmarted from time to time, and start to question our beliefs and values. But this of course is exactly what the right wants us to do. They want us to doubt ourselves and listen to their arguments, which are designed to undermine our core progressive beliefs and throw us off balance. Don’t listen to them, and don’t give them what they want.
As progressives, we have always known that we are the smartest and most informed people on the planet, taking opinions from the most respected luminaries from academia, the media and popular culture, while rejecting beliefs deemed to be conspiracy theories or “extreme” by respected officials and public figures. By always taking our opinions and beliefs from the most respected individuals and never questioning approved narratives, we can be confident that we are correct and righteous, and that anyone who questions us is ignorant and a hateful bigot.
The accredited media provides us with “special reports” and important updates from fancy studios, keeping us informed with the latest and most relevant facts and narratives. Panels of experts interview people from all sides of the political spectrum, casting doubt on the opinions that are patently ridiculous, while responding positively to the opinions that are correct and appropriate, which lets us know who to believe and who to dismiss. By closely following the accredited media, we are able to stay ahead of the game, and consistently outsmart right-wingers who have been indoctrinated with fake news.
Our schools and universities also provide us with thoroughly researched and substantiated conclusions and opinions, and we adopt them diligently without the gall to question the experts. This allows us to always be on the cusp of progress, giving us both a sense of moral righteousness and a sense of entitlement and superiority. We know that we are right, and that we have all the answers to the world’s problems. Social justice is our cause, academia is our fountain of wisdom, and the accredited media is our bedrock. We are progressives, and we are the future. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.
