President Rodrigo Duterte, the 16th President of the Philippines, has proven himself to be nothing short of a common thug. From insulting respected US politicians from Barrack Obama to John Kerry, to challenging China and most recently attacking the Rothschilds, Duterte has immeasurably disrupted the global order, and caused a resurgence of right-wing nationalism in South Asia, which mirrors the scary rise of the alt right in the West. Duterte has made bold claims about killing drug lords with his own two hands, and has effectively branded himself as a liberator, able to save the people from the clutches of the cartels. Like Trump, he has also used populist rhetoric for political gain, vowing to start putting the interests of the Philippines ahead of those of special interest groups, foreign powers and global institutions.
Like Trump, Duterte is a loose cannon. He blurts out whatever vulgarity is on his mind, has no sense of political correctness and pays no attention to the rules and standards of civility set by the accredited media. The following is just a short list of the horrific things he has said:
- To Obama: “Who does he think he is? I am no American puppet. I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people, nobody but nobody. You must be respectful. Do not just throw questions. Son of a bitch I will swear at you in that forum”
- To John Kerry: “he is okay, but I had an argument with their ambassador, that bakla (homosexual). Son of a bitch, he really annoys me.”
- To Obama: “You can go to hell, I will buy weapons from Russia”
- “[I will] eradicate all traces of Rothschild monetary criminality”
During his most recent controversy, he reportedly “joked” that his soldiers were allowed to “rape up to three women”, an appallingly sexist and unacceptable form of humor. In disgust, Chelsea Clinton immediately responded with the following tweet:
Not funny. Ever. https://t.co/XUIo85noBQ
— Chelsea Clinton (@ChelseaClinton) May 26, 2017
Duterte then replied with this appalling statement:
“These whores, they hear “rape”. Like, like Chelsea, she slammed me. I was not joking, I was being sarcastic. Listen to the speech. I do not laugh at my own jokes … I will tell her, when your father, the president of the United States, was f-ing Lewinsky and the girls in the White House, how did you feel? Did you slam your father?”
Comparing Bill Clinton’s minor mistake to his unacceptable rhetoric, is patently ridiculous, and an insult. He should apologize immediately to Chelsea for insulting her father. I hope that Duterte is aware that he is most likely talking to the future president of the United States.
I think it’s safe to say that Duterte is the worst Filipino President ever. Never before has a Filipino president been the subject of so much controversy in the accredited media. He is the subject of multiple headline articles per month in respected newspapers like the New York Times, the Guardian and the Washington Post, and has been a source of constant triggering for progressives. Not being white, it’s difficult to deal with him, because we can’t simply brand him as racist, although he is certainly sexist. It’s also difficult to sway popular opinion in the West about a foreign president who few people are interested in hearing about. Duterte has however developed a cult following, and his example sets a dangerous precedent for what is acceptable in political discourse, and therefore his image and legacy must be destroyed at all costs. If something unfortunate were to happen to him, let’s just say that from our perspective in the accredited media, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
