Yet again, Donald Trump has set a new low for his presidency. This time, he has gravely offended (yet again!) over one billion Muslim people by failing to invite them to an Iftar dinner at the White House. For Trump, it seems even traditions have no value. Let us explain…
One of the oldest and noblest traditions in the USA was established by the great Thomas Jefferson in 1805. Sensitive as all great leaders are to the Islamic Faith, Jefferson held the first Iftar meal in the White House. For those unaware, Iftar is the first meal that celebrates the end of Ramadan, the holiest of all holy fasting periods. During Ramadan, every good Muslim abstains from all food, drink, and driving lorries on sidewalks.
Back in 1805, Jeffreson sent an invite to one idi Soliman Mellimelli, an envoy of Beylik of Tunis, making it clear that the dinner would not begin a moment before sunset.
Since 1805, this fine tradition has continued every year without fail (except for a short time between 1806-1995) and has helped build bridges between privileged Christian folk and their Abrahimic cousins. This year, Trump decided that if pork and fine wine was not to be on the menu, then to hell with those ‘evil Muslims!’
Short of feeding the one billion with bacon sandwiches for breakfast en masse and organizing a nude Mohammed Portrait competition, we struggle to think of ways Trump could be more offensive to our Muslim neighbors.
What Trump has utterly failed to understand is that he needs to kow-tow to the Muslim population, pretend to be tolerant, and serve them in all things, whilst turning a blind eye to the persecution privileged Christians and their families face on a daily basis in the Middle East.
