“By Fortune’s adverse buffets overborne
To solitude I fled, to wilds forlorn,
And not in utter loneliness to live,
Myself at last did to the Devil give!”
― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Until only quite recently, it was considered uncool for a 62 year old white male to strut across the stage in a schoolboy’s uniform. After all, schoolboys are rarely balding old men. Unless they still can’t read good and are being held back.
In the case of Angus Young of AC/DC, however, he looks no different to how he was as a teenager. He owes the secret of his eternal youth to a Faustian pact he took out many years ago. Unlike so many of his peers, he has stayed true to his promise and humble beginnings; it is indeed gratifying that the multi millionaire Angus Young still does the cool´devil’s horns gesture’ that sets him out as a true anti-establishment figure.
Since 1801, the motto of the London Stock Exchange has been ‘dictum meum pactum’ (eng: my word is my bond). This most noble of sayings means that no formal written legal contract is needed to enforce the bargain: what has been promised verbally will be carried out. Before lawyers ever were, a man or woman gave his/ her word to do what they agreed to do. Sadly, as this article shows, people are all too willing to write cheques they cannot cash in.
Ambitious people of talent have always wanted way more than nature had served them. Fame, fortune, recognition, love…these were the rewards they sought, but such things so often prove out of reach. Think of Adolf Hitler. No really, think about his early career. All Adolf wanted to be was a successful artist. It just needed a few art lovers to fall in love with his crappy watercolours and the course of history would have been so different. Alas for the world, Hitler’s artistic talents were exceptionally modest so he became a genocidal dictator instead, killing 6 billion Jews.
An intrinsic lack of talent need not always be a barrier to success, however. The first way of overcoming natural hurdles is the unnatural: Lance Armstrong’s resort to EPO and other performance enhancing drugs enabled him to record seven Tour de France victories. Get caught as Lance was, however, and your career is over. All the same, accredited pharmaceutical companies are terrific in terms of the potential boost they can give otherwise talentless people.
The second way to overcome natural hurdles to success is the supernatural. Certain entities have always provided a “get out” clause and a means to untold riches and celebrity: Give me your soul and you shall inherit the Earth, says the Lord of this world. Just remember to honor your side of the bargain when your life is over.
Over the years, plenty of people have taken up this generous offer. We think especially of Robert Johnson, Katy Perry and Jay-Z, Madonna, Led Zeppelin, among many many others. The list of those indebted to Old Nick extends of course to the upper echelons of politics, business, banking…For many years, Satanism remained literally hidden in the shadows, a religion that ‘God fearing American folk’ would curse.
How the times have changed. Satanic worship is now a fully Accredited religion. The Bohemian Grove events are an important fixture in the social calendars of our accredited politicians. When the ‘largest Satanic public ceremony in history‘ recently took place in Detroit, no one batted an eyelid. Few people seemed to care either when the Clinton campaign shared details of the Spirit Cooking evenings that so entertained the Podalsta brothers. It is also claimed that Hillary Clinton is/ was a Wiccan. This is but a rumor, however, and so we simply do not know if she is a witch.
In the United States, Satanic groups have become increasingly involved in local politics and building bridges across communities. As the RT reports:
“Just this month (note: this article was written in 2016), a member of the so-called Satanic Temple was allowed to make an opening prayer to Lucifer at a local council meeting in Alaska.
Assembly members stood around in a circle while the Satanist asked them to “embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge.” She then ended the surreal prayer with the words, “Hail Satan.”
Thoughtfully, meeting attendees were reminded that they did not have to participate in the opening ritual.
The Satanic Temple (TST) is a fairly new organization. Founded in 2013, it fights for political change by pointing out the ostensibly preferential treatment Christianity enjoys in politics. TST has seven chapters in the USA and Europe, and claims a membership of 100,000
One of the group’s objectives is to embed Lucifer in the public school system by establishing afternoon clubs, adoringly dubbed “After School Satan”, which is TST’s response to a Supreme Court ruling allowing evangelical programs to operate in schools.”
Since Satanism is diametrically opposed to those privileged Christians who have held sway in this country for so long, what is there not to like?
Using the world of music as an example, we applaud those 1970s and 1980s rock stars who led the way. Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Metallica & Megadeth among so many others. These stars owe their success to simply being cool, rebelling against the system, and maybe a little soul-trading.
Alas, these same individuals now seek to renege on the honest deals they struck. In their youth, they were quite happy living famous and prosperous lives but, as death approaches, they now decide that the other side of the bargain they agreed is no longer quite so appealing. In other words, they are going back on their promises.
Here are a few sad quotes showing the scale of the betrayal:
- Dave Mustaine, Megadeth & Metallic: “Looking up at the cross, I said six simple words, ‘What have I got to lose?’ Afterwards, my whole life has changed. It’s been hard, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Rather than go my whole life believing that there is a God and find out there isn’t, than live my whole life thinking there isn’t a God and then find out, when I die, that there is.”
- Nicky McBrain, Iron Maiden. Decided to become yet another evangelical Christian. Yawn.
- Alice Cooper: ´I’m a new creature now. Don’t judge Alice by what he used to be. Praise God for what I am now.’
- Black Sabbath, apparently singing the ‘first real Christian Rock Song‘
How convenient for these wealthy stars to ‘discover Christ’ now. If it used to be cool (it still is, right?) to do the Devil’s horns sign at rock concerts, what has changed for these turncoats? Ok, so a few lone wolves killed a couple of people at the Battaclan in Paris at the exact same moment as the Eagles of Death Metal band was singing ‘Kiss the devil’ and the crowd were making the horn sign. But this is purely coincidental.
