One of the most pressing social justice issues that the accredited media has been dedicating its attention to lately, is the widespread injustice against trans people. Transphobia has been a problem in the West for centuries, but since the election of Donald Trump, it has only accelerated. Many Americans now think that it is perfectly reasonable to oppose transgender bathrooms, despite it being illegal in many states and countries to deny disabled people special facilities. But the truth is, bathrooms are the least of our concerns. The most widespread form of discrimination against trans people by far, is the abundance of binary gender references in all literature and media, spanning both the public and private sectors.
In the public sector we have passport documents that still classify people into binary genders. Many trans people deeply resent the fact that their passport still refers to the binary gender they were branded with as a child, especially when gender is such an important aspect of a trans person’s identity. Binary passports are an absolute disgrace, bringing grief and trauma to millions of misgendered individuals, who have to be reminded of the identity that was forced on them by society whenever they present their documentation. Passports need to be modified to match the 72 genders that Facebook has identified, and to add more as we discover more. It’s pathetic that a private company, Facebook, is ahead of progressive governments on this – the state usually leads the way in every regard, but on this issue they can’t even beat a private company to the punch! Come on, we can do better than this!
It also pains trans people to read novels in which every character is referred to as “he” or “she”, read scientific papers which split subjects into “male” and “female” control groups, and see clothing stores with “male” and “female” sections. Cisnormativity is so rampant that even WordPress, the software on which the Accredited Times is built, does not recognize words like “transphobia” and “cis-normativity”. It’s simply amazing how unaware society is about this issue! Do people really not have a spare moment to address our concerns as trans people? Don’t we matter at all?
More children are identifying as trans than ever before, thanks to the ongoing efforts of progressives to educate them early about the gender continuum and encourage them to think about which of the thousands of genders they can identify as, rather than passively accepting the binary gender they were assigned at birth. Pediatric experts now believe that misgendering children is child abuse, and legal experts are even saying that trans people have grounds to sue their parents for denying them puberty blockers, due to the severe adverse effects of wrong-sex puberty. The world is changing fast, because of radical progressives, and although we may be a minority, the majority needs to appease us and recognize our code of moral conduct. They need to give us a fair hearing, just like we give conservatives a fair hearing, without misrepresenting their arguments, heckling them or branding their views as “hate”.
I’m non-binary and I want to use the womyn’s bathroom because I identify more as a female than a male. But I’m not allowed to, because society still doesn’t recognize my rights in the 21st century! And I’m not the only one who is upset – there are millions of angry young trans people, just like me, who want their rights to be respected, and their gender to be mentioned on TV and in literature. Come on America, we can do better than this!
