A common phrase used by commonfolk in order to guilt successful people into handing them money, is the phrase “you need to give something back to society”. The important word in this phrase is “back”, as capitalists have indeed taken from society. Capitalism is not about “creating” value and exchanging it for money, as many theorists on the right claim. In fact, it is about taking what is already there, leaving others with less. Common people tolerate capitalists out of generosity, but really these swindlers are nothing but parasites who sap money out of society in a zero sum game.
Capitalists not only steal money from society, leaving others poor and exploited, they also gleefully use the many resources provided to them by the government, such as the roads, the internet and the services of countless hardworking government workers. And to top it off, add in the significant contributions of slaves and underpaid people of color in the building of the Texas oil industry, New York City, the aviation industry and Silicon Valley. These capitalists are resting on the shoulders of oppressed giants! As President Obama wisely stated, “you didn’t build that”, somebody else did, most likely someone further up the oppression pyramid than you. Hence the phrase, “it’s time to give something BACK to society” rings loud and true.
So where did all this value in society come from you may ask, if not from some kind of value creation process? The answer is that it was produced by the proletariat, and the fruits of their labor were stolen by the capitalists who employed them. So why don’t the proletariat pursue the same opportunities that the capitalists pursued, you ask? Well, they lack the means of production. So, are they putting any significant time or effort into attaining these means, you ask? We prefer not to answer.
The fact is, capitalists didn’t build that. But you can’t apply that logic to the government, or slaves, or people of color, or womyn – they DID build that, and you should thank them for their immeasurable contributions, white male! It’s time for everybody at the bottom of the oppression pyramid to give something (a lot) back to society, or prepare for the wrath of the proletariat. No wealth is earned by white males – it is ALL stolen, and until ALL of it is given back to everyone else, we will continue to use this phrase with abandon!
