The Emmy Award-winning TV series, the Handmaid’s Tale, adapted from a book by prominent feminist author Margaret Atwood, is an frightening depiction of what life could be like if the alt right ever comes to power in America. The show aptly reminds women of the horror of a revived patriarchy, and has reinvigorated the feminist movement with a new sense of fear and desire for independence from men.
The story begins in a dystopian future, in which fertility rates have dropped due to environmental toxins, much like they already have in the west. In the ensuing turmoil, and in the aftermath of a civil war, right wing Christians institute a military theocracy in which women are reduced mere breeding machines. They are forced to dress in dull uniforms, are stripped of most of their rights, and are routinely beaten by their white male Christian bigot husbands. This is not at all a far-cry from what the alt right envisions for women. They often talk about “white Sharia”, which would subjugate and control women under a system of brutal control. As you can see, even though we feminists turned a blind eye to actual Islamic Sharia that has been going on for centuries, and is rapidly encroaching in the west, we are already outraged at “white Sharia”, which has barely surfaced as an idea and doesn’t even exist yet, so much so that we write whole articles on it. See? The only variable that changed was Arab to white, and that’s all it takes to turn feminists from acquiescent to outraged. That’s intersectionality for you.
The alt right complains that modern western women are “indecent”, incapable of uttering a politically incorrect thought, clueless about the risks of the policies they advocate like uncontrolled immigration, and totally selfish in their political beliefs, advocating for free contraception, the welfare state and preferential hiring, with no regard for society or others who are harmed by these policies. The alt right wants to strip women of their rights because they believe that they aren’t “biologically” equipped to play the traditional roles of men in society. But biology is a social construct.
Feminism has succeeded in creating millions of happy, single, independent female cubicle workers with cats for company, but now this progress is under threat from a new resistance movement formed of alt right freaks. Thanks to this series however, feminists now understand exactly what would happen to them if the alt right ever came to power, and it has filled them with rage against right wing men, the “men’s rights” movement and anyone who challenges feminism in any way. These women aren’t going down without a fight, and they’re not just going to sit there while you lecture them about why they are wrong. They’re going to kick, scream and fight until their last dying breath before they listen to a single thing a patriarch says to them, because their freedom is at stake.
