Washington, D.C. (Accredited Times) – Diversity is our greatest strength. Thanks to diversity, we not only have an edible assortment of curries, slurries, and McFlurries, but we also have become culturally enriched with a fantastic fugue of fashion fripperies, most notably hijabs and niqabs from the Land of Punjab.
In 1990, Chuck Schumer, then a congressional representative, pushed for a new program to add much-needed diversity to the United States: the Diversity Visa Program. Passed under the Immigration Act of 1990, the Diversity Visa Program uses a random lottery system to make 50,000 permanent resident visas available annually with no “merit” factors considered whatsoever. Selectees do not need to know English, Elvish, or even Spanglish. Former President George Bush signed the program into law. Current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voted for it, as did Schumer, who is now the Senate Minority Leader.
The program has helped improve diversity substantially. Although only 50,000 visas are available annually, immigration totals have increased exponentially as a result of “chain migration” where other family members automatically can join the original applicant in immigrating to the United States. For example, in 2010, Uzbekistan-born Sayfullo Saipov, an underrepresented Muslim, immigrated to the United States under the program. Seven years later, Saipov had already brought twenty-three of his family members with him, none of whom would have qualified under any other immigration program. Since 1990, roughly 1.4 million immigrants have moved to the United States under the Diversity Visa Program alone; if each of those immigrants were to bring just twenty-three family members, total immigration would exceed 33 million immigrants.
Xenophobes, of course, have argued against the program on two grounds. First, they sound the dog-whistle of so-called “radical Islamic terrorism” based on the “lone wolf” instance of Sayfullo Saipov, an underrepresented Muslim, allegedly killing eight civilians in New York City on October 31, 2017. However, the accredited media has explained that we have no idea as to Saipov’s motive. Moreover, although America lost eight civilians, the country gained possibly over 33 million more, not to mention Saipov’s twenty-three other family members. Overall, that’s clearly a net increase in people, meaning tax revenues will undoubtedly increase thanks to the program.
Second, xenophobes have asserted that these immigrants generally have no skills and that many cannot speak English. And why is this bad exactly? America needs people from all socioeconomic backgrounds — not just doctors and other skilled workers. A so-called “merit” system would just force overqualified people to work in boring jobs and, worse, would lower the number of Democrat Party voters. It’s also well-established that English is racist; after all, the English language includes many racial slurs, including the “n-word.”
These xenophobic arguments are simply nonsensical. Moreover, xenophobes ignore the major benefit of the program: diversity helps weaken nationalism and strengthen globalism. Nationalism, of course, causes war, including, most notably, World Wars I and II. In contrast, globalism leads to peace, as illustrated by the United Nations’ heroic efforts at peacekeeping around the world. Diverse immigrants are more likely to agree that the national anthem is racist and to agree with international standards, such as the standard that hate speech is not free speech and that guns should be confiscated. We need more immigrants to improve our chances of ever obtaining a one world government.
In short, the facts strongly weigh in favor of keeping the Diversity Visa Program. Anyone who opposes it is an evil racist.
