Google Rocked by Racism Scandal; Progressives Call on CEO to Resign

Google's recent doodle depicts racist stereotypes.

Mountain View, California (Accredited Times) – In 2014, multiple progressive news outlets reported on racism in Google’s “doodles” — the images that Google features on its front page.  A study by SPARK Movement found that a shocking 74% of Google’s doodles “honored white people” and only “4.3% honored women of color.”  After the bombshell revelations, Google’s executives apologized to SPARK and “emphasized their commitment to more diversity not only in Google Doodles, but also Google as a company.”

Shockingly, however, Google now has yet another racism scandal on its hands in yet another incident involving Google’s doodles.  Progressive activists are now demanding that Google CEO Sundar Pichai resign immediately.

The racism scandal exploded in response to Google’s doodles posted on November 7, 2017.  The doodles portray racial stereotypes of People of Color from the Southeastern Asian country of Thailand.  In the doodles, blue, red, green, and yellow Thais are depicted eating “Pad Thai” while using chopsticks and having “slant” eyes.  The doodles purportedly celebrate the Thai dish “Pad Thai,” but Google shockingly chose to denigrate the Thai people with the blatant stereotypes.  More shockingly, according to a USA Today article linked by the doodle, “Pad Thai” did not even originate in Thailand; instead “the origins of the dish appear to go back to China.”  Consequently, not only did Google engage in clear racial stereotyping and microaggressions, but Google also “celebrated” an apparent act of cultural appropriation and doubled-down by culturally appropriating the Chinese dish for a non-Chinese audience.  Google’s website even gives instructions for how to make Pad Thai.

The incident mirrors the controversy surrounding Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel), who recently was accused of racism for including a picture of a “Chinaman” in his first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1937).  Earlier this month, three prominent social justice warriors/authors, Mo Willems, Lisa Yee, and Mike Curato, announced that they would not be appearing at a scheduled event at the Dr. Seuss Museum in Springfield, Massachusetts because of a mural containing the picture, which they described as racist because it included a “jarring racial stereotype of a Chinese man who is depicted with chopsticks, a pointed hat and slanted slit eyes.”  The progressives found the “caricature of ‘the Chinaman’ deeply hurtful” because of its clear “racism.”  In response, the Dr. Seuss Museum apologized and agreed to remove the mural.

The racist Dr. Seuss illustration from And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1937) (above) bears remarkable similarities to the racist Google doodle.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has undoubtedly taken some positive strides against racism at Google.  Importantly, Pichai, an Indian-American, has generally refused to hire white males and instead has opted for a more diverse work force comprised of Indian H1B immigrants.  In 2015, Google sought a record 4,048 H1B visas and a record 1,492 green cards.  In 2016, Google sought 4,182 H1B visas and 1,386 green cards.

Notably, Pichai also fired white male James Damore after the Harvard-educated software engineer wrote a memo suggesting that the “possible” reasons for fewer womyn in tech and leadership positions could include biological differences between men and womyn.  After terminating Damore, Pichai wrote an extensive note to employees stating that Google “strongly support[s] the right of Googlers to express themselves,” but that he nonetheless fired Damore because Damore’s memo was simply “not OK.”  “It is contrary to our basic values and our Code of Conduct, which expects ‘each Googler to do their utmost to create a workplace culture that is free of harassment, intimidation, bias and unlawful discrimination,’” Pichai wrote.

It’s time for Google to hold Sundar Pichai to the same standard.  Google’s doodle is clearly racist, just like the Dr. Seuss illustration.  Pichai failed to stop the bias and unlawful discrimination despite warnings over three years ago from progressives about racism in Google’s doodles.  Pichai’s racism is absolutely inexplicable and unconscionable in the current year.

Kermit the...uh...Salamander

And those doodles look suspiciously like Pepe the Frog….GOOGLE IS RUN BY NAZI’S!!!!!

Amazing journalism. Just because people ‘thought differently’ and held different values reflective of the time 100 years ago, is no excuse not to have anticipated the enlightened culture of Current Year. There is simply no excuse for Dr Seus drawing that racist caricature of a Chinese cisgendered male.

I’m going to look through some old family books right now to see what I can find to be grotesquely offended by.

A lot of books need to be burned. Off the top of my head, Atlas Shrugged, Brave New World, Animal Farm, all of Rudyard Kipling’s books, all of Enid Blyton’s books. We have a lot of burning to do. And while we’re at it, we should burn white history books and replace them with Afrocentrism. Racist history needs to be historically revised.

MDB…I think we should consider the environment and instead compost those books rather than burn them. Think of the carbon emissions…man…wake up!

No, no, no…you’ve got it all wrong. Our job as progressives is to tell other people what they have to do (consider the environment) but we get to do what we want, which is often quite different. Think of Bono, for example, who has done a wonderful job telling politicians to abolish poverty NOW! He is aghast at how evil corporations sneakily avoid paying taxes in the countries where they do business, screaming blue murder at the likes of Exxon Mobile.

His admirable stance means we should not criticise Bono when he himself uses offshore tax avoidance schèmes, because that is all perfectly legal. Same goes for Sting and CO2 emissions, which he flies around the world in his private jet to warn us about.

So, we MUST burn hateful books now. Burn! Burn! Burn! It is much more dramatic than composting them in any case.

Yes, you’re right. We should be able to do whatever we want. Like Matt Damon, who tells us how great public schools are while sending his kids to a private school.

Exxon markets cellphones now? Well thank god because the oil business is horrible and they are, like other oil majors, of immensely fading relevance.

Even at their peak, XOM was making $40B in profit on $500B in revenues, a stellar profit margin of 8%, well below SP500 averages.

Their margins have declined markedly as EROI has plunged. Transocean rig utilization tells the tale- the rigs that are sitting idle have depth limits of 7500′ of water. The ones that aren’t are the rigs with 10k and 12k feet capabilities. This should tell you that there really isn’t much oil left in less than 8000 fsw.

This oil is all very expensive stuff to procure. The majors are borrowing heavily to sustain dividends and their profit margins have dwindled while cost of sales has gone through the roof.

Wow I’m so sorry! You’re absolutely right. We should put them in John Sakars’ composting toilet.

Wow! First we had a rogue Google employee suggesting that there might be differences between men and womyn, and now we have them culturally appropriating oppressed Asians! Google seriously needs to get its act together and make it clear that it will NOT tolerate sexism or racism! Google needs to fire all of its white male engineers and hire only female, trans and engineers of color instead!

Thank you for exposing these racists!

I was so distraught when I saw that Google Doodle that I had to go to our city office’s “Chill Room” (that I did the $200K grant writing for in 2015) for over 3 hours.

Pichai must resign!

I prefer “nap pods” personally.
