We have the British to thank for inventing the bulk of sports we play and watch today. Once they had built their empire and subjugated people of color, British army officers and the aristocracy naturally had to find meaningful ways of filling their days. Ordering Indians and Africans around might have taken up most of the morning, but what to do after lunch once the alcoholic haze had evaporated? The average British officer enjoyed many hours of leisure each day and by Jove they meant to enjoy them.
This excess of ‘leisure time’ explains why the British introduced many sports to the world including soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, hockey, badminton, table tennis and darts. Even if the British largely suck at most of these sports today, we must never forget that this was their endowment to the world. Whenever we watch sports events on prime time TV, we largely have the British to thank.
Today, ‘sport’ is a multi-billion global industry, whether we are talking about the English Premier League (soccer), the ATP World Tour (tennis), the Tour de France (Cycling), boxing, or the UEFA Champions League (soccer again). Accredited businesses the world over are desperate to sponsor these sports and invest in the ‘winning team’. In cycling, for example, media giant Sky has backed serial Tour winner, Chris Froome, and reaped the rewards many times over.
For some inexplicable reason, however, the majority of televised sports concerns men. Most sponsorship money, likewise, is invested in male athletes or male-dominated sports. What’s more, most people who watch sports on TV are men, and are mostly interested in other men playing sport. Who takes part in the ‘World Cup’. Male soccer players. Who is involved in the ‘Tour de France?’ Male cyclists. Womyn simply do not get a let in.
Why? Are all these men gay? Despite womyn making up approximately 50% of the world population, they attract only minimal sponsorship. Why is this?
We know from accredited TV broadcasting and media that women are identical to men in all respects. Their VO2 max statistics are the same, they have the same muscle capacity. Many transgendered athletes have won medals for Allah’s sake. Natural physical ability is therefore exactly the same between the sexes so this cannot explain why womyns’ sports has such a poor audience. The main reason, sadly, is pure misogyny: men simply cannot bear the idea of losing to a womyn in any sports event.
When womyn athletes are covered in the media, it’s usually in the form of sexist photos which accentuate their physical attributes. Photos like this:

It seems then that womyn athletes are simply objectified in the media just as they are in daily life. We forget, however, that these female athletes are in peak condition, that they are more than capable of beating their male counterparts. Take womyn athlete, Caitlyn Jenner, who kicked ass when competing under a male pseudonym. Since Caitlyn identified as a womyn all those years ago, this means she legitimately beat all her male rivals.
In conclusion, only pure misogyny is preventing womyn from breaking all number of world records as well as balancing their career, family life, love life, and other pursuits.
What we need to take womyn’ sports further is equal (with men) funding of spend. Womyn have proved themselves as the physical equal of men in all meaningful ways. We simply need to back our female athletes and give them a chance to succeed.
