Russia has become a serious threat to world peace, with their series of escalating acts of aggressive expansionism. With the tragic election of Trump as US President, Obama now has until January the 20th 2017 to pass as much progressive legislation as possible before Trump gets into power. Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to “get along” with Russia despite their hostility towards the free world and their opposition to our foreign policy objectives. Having an apologist for such an aggressive adversary in the White House seriously compromizes our national security, and Obama needs to engage Russia now in order to force Trump’s hand.
Russia has repeatedly demonstrated their intentions to aggressively expand their interests through military force, with their annexation of Crimea and their backing of the Assad government in Syria. Most recently, a Russian naval ship aggressively sailed through the English Channel, and another outrageously attempted to stop for fuel in Spain, which is absolutely unprecedented. Seventeen accredited sources in the US government also believe that Russia was responsible for hacking the Wikileaks documents and initiating the recent crippling cyberattacks against many of our top companies and institutions. These acts of aggression indicate the Russia may be planning a full scale invasion, using a combination of tactical nukes, ground invasions and further cyberattacks. Obama needs to pre-emptively strike against Russia by setting up a no-fly zone over Syria, forcing Putin to either retreat or engage us in kinetic action.
Russia’s propaganda war is already in full force, with a variety of Putin-backed alt-right websites such as Drudge, Infowars and Zerohedge running a non-stop disinformation campaign against progressive Western governments. In addition, Russia Today is broadcasting perspectives that challenge the accredited narratives about Russian aggressive expansionism and Assad’s crimes against humanity to millions of Westerners. In order to combat this disinformation, Obama needs to declare a state of emergency and suspend the first amendment, which will allow our government to censor alt-right websites and ban RT.
Obama has between now and the 20th of January to achieve as much as possible before Trump gets into office, and combating Russian aggression should be his number one priority. Once the West is involved in outright kinetic action with Russia, Trump will be forced to finish what Obama started, and his dreams of some kind of truce with our sworn enemy will be all but shattered. In the interest of national security, Obama must act now.
