As Social Justice Warriors, our daily routines are so full of identifying and combating micro-aggressions that we can be visually-impaired to industrial-scale injustices. Modern electricity is just one example of a macro-aggression, which is hidden in plain sight.
Like any other well-read progressive, I know that electricity was invented by black Africans many centuries ago. Whilst there is no actual proof of this, it is nontheless a fact. Unfortunately, as well also know, the truth about the African origins of electricity has been ruthlessly distorted; modern physics textbooks instead associate electricity with white males such as Faraday, Franklin, Edison, von Guericke, Watt. Greater than all of these however, was inventor of color, Lewis Latimer.
According to one accredited publication, Latimer was the “the African-American renaissance man who in the late 19th century helped not only invent the lightbulb, but also create the electric industry as we know it today.” The fact that white males like Thomas Edison still get the credit for inventions such as light bulbs is “likely a reflection of the times when big ideas couldn’t possibly be ascribed to non-white people, especially when the burgeoning eugenics movement was considered serious science. But Latimer had already been involved in a major invention, having helped Alexander Graham Bell patent the telephone in 1876.” Quite.
Following in the footsteps of the giant who was Lewis Latimer was an obscure white male Serbian inventor called Nikola Tesla. Whilst Latimer lay almost all the groundwork for much of today’s electrical infrastructure such as alternating current, remote control, the induction motor, three-phase electric power, neon lamps, wireless telegraphy and the vacuum variable capacitor, Tesla essentially claimed all these inventions for his own. Not only this, but the Latimer coil was re-named the Tesla coil!
What Latimer most certainly did not do was build this monstrosity:
Built in 1901 in Shoreham, Long Island, Tesla’s so-called ‘Tower of Power’ was the epitomy of male phallic worship; can there be any doubt of this after seeing the above picture?
Tesla denied that there was any hidden sexual meaning or purpose behind his huge electrical appendage, which spurted millions of white electric discharges from its head. Instead, demonstrating that he was a world-class conspiracy theorist as well as a thief, Tesla provided an explanation that simply beggars belief. He claimed that the purpose of the tower was to provide ‘wireless transmission of electricity’ on a ‘free’ basis to anyone who needed it. Moreover, he alleged that financier J.P. Morgan had initially been interested in and financed the phallic tower but withdrew prematurely when he realised there was no money to be made in a venture than supplied electricity to all at no cost.
The fact that J.P Morgan’s financial legacy is still very much with us whereas Tesla’s power of tower is no longer erect tells us everything.
